Getting a huge boost from their bench to go with solid play in the paint, the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners raced past the Wiley University JV 78-56 Wednesday at Shands Gymnasium.
AC's Kayla Johns-McGarity came off the bench to lead the Lady 'Runners with 17 points – part of AC's 34 total points from the bench – and 12 rebounds, while starter Aminah Dixon added another 16 points. Timberlyn Washington's all-around effort netted 13 points, three assists and three steals, and Melanie Hodges finished with nine rebounds and five points in the win.
Wiley's Asia Foster led the Lady Wildcats with 17 points.
AC head coach Addie Lees has been pushing her team to crash the boards, and on Wednesday, the emphasis paid off in a big way. The Lady Roadrunners finished with 54 rebounds to Wiley's 24, and AC capitalized on the offensive boards with 23 second-chance points.
AC's ladies opened up a big lead in the third quarter after leading 21-14 at the half, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 17-9 in the period. The Lady 'Runner lead would reach as many as 26 points by game's end.
The Lady Roadrunners (2-3) will travel to Hillsboro on Saturday to face Hill College in a game scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. AC then returns home on Tuesday, tipping off at 5:30 against Southern University-Shreveport at Shands Gymnasium.
