Angelina College pitcher Shelby Mixon had herself quite a day, earning both Lady Roadrunner wins in the circle.
It took some late-game theatrics for the last win to happen.
AC catcher Reagan White made a lunging tag to nail the would-be tying run at the plate for the final out in the Lady Roadrunners’ 4-3 win in the nightcap. That 7th-inning play came a half inning after Lady ‘Runner Jessica Husband tied the game with an RBI double and scored the eventual winning run on a throwing error following Rachel Agnello’s infield single.
Mixon, who threw a complete-game in AC’s 7-1 win in the opener, finished the doubleheader having pitched 13 straight innings of the twin bill. Leigh Luker earned the save in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh in the nightcap.
AC led 2-0 after five innings, only to see the Cougars put together a three-run sixth inning when Michaela Kelley doubled and scored on a wild pitch and Hanna Schaafer drove home two runs with a single.
In the seventh, Western Nebraska’s Madi Jackson drew a one-out walk, and when Kelley’s ground ball to the infield was misplayed into an overthrow, Jackson tried to score from second. AC’s White took the throw up the line and dove headfirst to deny Jackson the tying run and end the game.
In the early game, Kiriany Hornberger, Jessica Husband and Nikki Whitehead drove in two runs each. Emilee Cernosek added a run-scoring single, and Mixon struck out eight Cougars, retiring 13 straight at one point.
In the late win, Husband collected two RBI while Agnello added another.
The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Mount Pleasant on Saturday to take on Northeast Texas Community College in a doubleheader scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
