Wednesday’s 1-1 draw between the Angelina College Roadrunners and the No. 5-ranked Northeast Texas Community College Eagles was much more than a thrilling soccer match.
The result was a bit of history for the young AC program – and it kept afloat hopes of the Roadrunners’ first-ever post-season appearance.
AC’s Brad Lowes knocked home the equalizer with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, and a stellar Roadrunner defensive effort kept the Eagles from scoring for nearly 60 minutes in providing the AC men with their best-ever result against a ranked team.
“Our guys battled a full 90 minutes on the road at Jacksonville (a 4-3 Roadrunner win) just 23 hours prior to Wednesday’s match against NTCC,” head coach Freddy Drago said. “The draw is the first-ever positive result against a nationally ranked team, but most importantly, we’re just one game back of the final playoff spot with two games to play.”
The Lady Roadrunners have already clinched their third post-season appearance in three years, having locked down third place in the Region XIV standings behind nationally ranked Tyler Junior College and Navarro College.
Both AC teams will host Blinn College Saturday at Jase Magers Field in Lufkin. The teams will also celebrate Sophomore Day prior to each match in honor of the five Lady Roadrunner and 14 Roadrunner sophomores.
Game times are 5 p.m. for the Lady ‘Runners and 7 p.m. for the Roadrunners.
