Angelina College head men’s basketball coach Nick Wade has waited patiently for his shot at a head-coaching job. A long-time assistant at several levels, Wade got his first chance at the top spot with AC heading into the 2018-2019 season.

Wade didn’t waste any time showing his accumulated knowledge.

The “rookie” in Region XIV proceeded to take a team picked to finish near the bottom of the standings to the conference tournament semifinals. The Roadrunners entered the tournament as the South Zone’s second seed and only succumbed to the No. 1 seed to end the team’s season at 18-14 – despite Wade’s inheriting just one returning starter.

His efforts didn’t go unnoticed. This week, conference coaches voted Wade the Region XIV South Zone Coach of the Year.

Wade’s lone returning starter was Kevin Norman, who earned 1st Team All-Region honors after averaging 19.2 points per game this past season, which was good enough for third in Region XIV. Norman also hit nearly 35 percent of his three-point attempts.

In addition, AC’s Hunter Janacek and Walter Prevost earned Honorable Mention honors.
